Alphanumeric CNPJ in SAP: what changes in master data, documents and integrations

The CNPJ (Cadastro Nacional da Pessoa Jurídica, the Brazilian company tax ID) still has 14 positions, but the first 12 now accept letters as well as numbers. The number your company has does not change. What changes is what your ERP (enterprise resource planning system, such as SAP) does when a new supplier, customer or branch arrives with letters in the CNPJ.

What changes in the CNPJ and what does not

The CNPJ now accepts letters from A to Z in the first 12 positions. The number your company already has stays exactly as it is

Source: Receita Federal Questions and Answers

What changes

Besides the numbers 0 to 9, the first 12 positions can have uppercase letters. The last 2, the check digits, stay numeric, and the total stays at 14 positions, in the same mask as today (Source: Receita Federal Questions and Answers)

The rule is in Normative Instruction (IN) RFB 2.229, of 15/10/2024, which amended IN RFB 2.119/2022 and created Annex XV, with implementation planned from July 2026 (Source: IN RFB 2.229/2024)

Why it changes

The reason is capacity. The Receita Federal (Brazil's federal tax authority) explains that demand for new CNPJ numbers is growing and that the alphanumeric format increases the possible combinations, avoiding repetition and ensuring the continuity of public policies (Source: Receita Federal Questions and Answers)

What does not change

Existing CNPJs stay exactly as they are, with the same check digits. Nobody needs to ask the Receita for an update, and no CNPJ will be canceled for not being alphanumeric.

The new format applies to new registrations, including new branches of old companies, and the two formats coexist in every process that uses the CNPJ (Source: Receita Federal Questions and Answers)

What changes for SAP

The database of partners, branches and documents no longer has a single type of identifier. Every field, validation, mask, interface, report and filing file that treats the CNPJ as a number becomes a possible point of failure.

The Receita warns that, without the update, a company may have difficulty issuing invoices and may face communication failures with suppliers and customers (Source: Receita Federal Questions and Answers)

The page on the tax reform with CBS and IBS gives a summary of the subject in the context of the reform. Here the subject is treated in the depth of a working guide.

Today, midway

Since 31/07/2026 both formats can already appear in the same database. The question is no longer when the format arrives. It is what your environment does on the day a partner, an invoice or a file arrives with letters in the CNPJ.

Number structure

The 14 positions, and what each one carries

The format is AA.AAA.AAA/AAAA-DV. Each A can be a number from 0 to 9 or an uppercase letter from A to Z. DV are the two check digits (Source: Receita Federal Questions and Answers).

Choose a test pattern and tap a group to read its rule.

1Root, 8 positions
2Order, 4
3DV, 2

A numeric CNPJ that already exists stays valid, with no change at all.

Root: 8 positions, numbers or letters. It identifies the company and is the same at the head office and the branches.

Shown on screen, with mask

12.ABC.345/01DE-35

Transmitted and stored, without mask

12ABC34501DE35

Read the example from left to right. The first eight positions identify the company, the next four identify the establishment and the last two serve as a check. That is the design your system must respect, and the mask, length and digit test must always consider the three groups, in any combination of numbers and letters.

Mask

The mask is the same as for the numeric CNPJ. There are always 14 characters, including leading zeros, as happens today. The mask is for display. Our recommendation: store and transmit without punctuation. In ECF files (ECF is the corporate income tax filing), the layout 12 manual asks for the CNPJ without a mask (Source: ECF layout 12 manual).

Letters carry no meaning

The letters are random. They do not identify a state, a legal form or any attribute, and the system cannot deduce anything from them. The Receita controls prohibited combinations internally, and advises systems to accept all letters of the alphabet (Source: Receita Federal Questions and Answers).

Head office and branch

The suffix 0001 marks the head office at the moment of generation, but it is no longer definitive: a branch can become the main establishment with another order number. The head office and the already numeric branches of an old company stay as they are, and new branches can come with letters (Source: Receita Federal Questions and Answers).

Combinations your system must accept

The Receita describes possible combinations between root and order. The examples below use fictional numbers, with check digits calculated by the official method. A match with a real registration may happen by chance, so use the National CNPJ Simulator to generate your company's test data.

Check digit

The calculation, checkable by hand

The algorithm is the usual modulo 11. The only novelty is how to turn each character into a number: the value is the ASCII code of the character minus 48 (Source: check digit calculation manual).

Why minus 48

Subtracting 48 makes the number 0 worth 0. That way, purely numeric CNPJs keep producing exactly the same check digits as before, and the old rule is a particular case of the new one (Source: check digit calculation manual).

Where errors usually come from

A routine that converts the character to a number by the digit value, without going through ASCII, works with numbers and fails with letters. A routine that reads the CNPJ as an integer loses the letters. In both cases the system rejects a valid CNPJ or accepts an invalid one.

Check digit calculator

Type the first 12 characters of a CNPJ, numbers and uppercase letters. The calculation runs in your browser, sends nothing anywhere and shows each step.

Examples

Use the calculator to check your system's validation routine. Type the first twelve characters of any test CNPJ, compare the calculated digits with the result of your program and repeat the test with numbers, letters and a mix. If there is a difference, the custom routine is not following the official calculation.

The official example, in short

The example below is the one from the Receita Federal and Serpro for the number 12.ABC.345/01DE. The numbers 0 to 9 have ASCII codes 48 to 57, so they are worth 0 to 9. Uppercase letters have codes from 65 (A) to 90 (Z), so they are worth 17 to 42 (Source: check digit calculation manual; Receita Federal Questions and Answers).

Note that the calculation can be fully checked: any analyst can redo it in a spreadsheet, without depending on a specific tool. This is useful for auditing the system's validation routine, which must reproduce the same results as the Receita for any combination of letters and numbers.

  • First digit: sum 459, remainder 8 when divided by 11, digit 11 minus 8, equals 3.
  • Second digit, with the 3 at the end: sum 424, remainder 6, digit 11 minus 6, equals 5.
  • Result: 12.ABC.345/01DE-35. The calculator above opens with this example and shows the calculation for each character.

The rules, in order

Recalculate before you trust it

Any validation routine in your environment must reproduce the result 35 for 12.ABC.345/01DE and the digits 12 for 00.000.000/E08G, the number cited by Fenacon as the first alphanumeric registration. If the routine gets either one wrong, it is not ready.

Access key

The 44-position key, field by field

The CNPJ change reaches the access key of the electronic tax document: the first 12 positions of the issuer's CNPJ now accept letters, and the key's check digit is calculated by the same criterion (Source: Joint Technical Note 2025.001, section 5). Type or paste a key, or choose an example, and see the 9 fields and the check digit test.

Illustrative example: fictional keyThe test runs in your browser and the key is not sent anywhere. Spaces, dots and dashes are ignored, and letters become uppercase.

Fictional keys, with the check digit calculated by the method of Annex II of the NT, which may match a real key by chance.

The rollout dates are in Dates and acts. Joint NT v1.00, of 25/04/2025, plans the testing environment for 06/04/2026 and production for 06/07/2026, and the NF-e Portal notice of 05/10/2026 deals with other NF-e technical notes and does not cite it. Deciding the deadline and the adaptation of the environment belongs to the client.

Who is affected

Every process that reads, stores or sends the CNPJ

The effect does not depend on your company changing its CNPJ. It depends on your environment receiving a new CNPJ from third parties.

Responsibility for the adaptation does not belong to one area alone. The tax area defines the determination rules and the filing, information technology handles fields, validations and integrations, finance answers for payments and reconciliation, and accounting follows the tax calculation. Without coordination between these areas, fixing one point usually creates a mismatch in another, and the company only finds the inconsistency at the next close.

01

Master data

Customer, supplier, branch, business place, bank and carrier. This is where the number enters the system, and the first place where a numeric mask breaks.

02

Document issuing

NF-e, NFC-e, CT-e and NFS-e carry the CNPJ of the issuer, the recipient, the carrier, the payment, the intermediary and other participants. The Technical Notes change the schemas (Source: list of Technical Notes on the NF-e Portal; notice of NT 2026.004 v1.00).

03

Document receiving

Whoever receives an invoice from a new supplier receives its CNPJ. Technical Note 2014.002 v1.40 brought the adaptation of tax document distribution, with rollout planned for 08/07/2026 (Source: notice of NT 2014.002 v1.40).

04

Withholdings and filing

The EFD-Reinf, the ECF and the other filings carry the CNPJ of service providers, service takers and the company itself. The Reinf and the ECF already have guidance from the SPED portal (Source: SPED notice on the EFD-Reinf; ECF layout 12 manual).

05

Banks and payments

Remittance and return files, Pix (Brazil's instant payment system), TED (bank transfer) and boleto (bank slip). SAP lists these routines among the affected areas (Source: SAP blog on the alphanumeric CNPJ). Pix with an alphanumeric CNPJ follows the same key principle (Source: Receita Federal Questions and Answers).

06

Integrations

Supplier portals, EDI, audit tools, support systems and custom interfaces. SAP recommends reviewing custom developments and interfaces that use the CNPJ or the access key (Source: SAP blog on the alphanumeric CNPJ).

07

A company that will never have an alphanumeric CNPJ

Still affected. New suppliers, customers, partner branches and service providers can arrive with letters. The volume of new partners per month shows how fast the mixed format appears in the database.

08

A company that opens a branch or a new company

It can receive an alphanumeric CNPJ at the first registration, including for a branch of an old company (Source: Receita Federal Questions and Answers). Then the company's own system is the first to be tested. The subject connects to tax rollout, when a new establishment enters SAP.

SAP impact map

Where the ERP assumes a number

The cards organize the impact by layer. In each one, the first block shows what the sources say and the second is the check the team should do.

A simple rule helps to read the map: the impact starts in master data, passes through the tax document, reaches the filing and ends in the payment.

That is why an end-to-end test with a single alphanumeric partner reveals more problems than dozens of isolated tests on each screen. Where the official source does not describe the behavior of a layer, the card only says what to check, without stating what the system does.

LayerWhat the sources sayHow to check

See electronic tax documents and NFS-e.Issue, receive and cancel documents in the testing environment with alphanumeric CNPJs. The CT-e has an official table of test CNPJs (Source: CT-e Portal notice).
Filing: SPED, EFD-Reinf, ECFThe Reinf has a new technical note and XSD (Source: SPED notice on the EFD-Reinf). The ECF defines the CNPJ as a 14-position character field, without a mask (Source: ECF layout 12 manual). For the EFD ICMS IPI and the ECD, check the current version on the SPED portal. See SPED.Generate the test files with alphanumeric partners and validate them in the official programs before the first close with the format.

Complementary tax solutions, such as GUEPARDO TaxThey go into the inventory like any installed solution: version, fields and interfaces that handle the CNPJ. Confirmation of compatibility comes from the vendor of each solution, in writing, and is tested in the testing environment. See GUEPARDO Tax.Ask the vendor for the version that accepts the format and repeat the tests from the combinations table.

Applying a note is not finishing

SAP notes solve the technical layer of the standard product. Even so, there are public reports of syntax errors and dumps after implementing the notes, which show dependencies between them and impact on custom code (Source: SAP KBA 3769328; SAP KBAs on syntax errors after the notes). SAP delivery dates are estimates, and one change was already reversed and replaced by another approach (Source: SAP blog on the alphanumeric CNPJ).

Step by step

From the field list to the first note with letters

A plan in eight steps. The Receita advises not waiting for the rollout date to start, and the inventory can move before any SAP note is applied (Source: Receita Federal Questions and Answers).

Step 01

Owner and scope

Define who answers for the subject and which companies, branches, systems and files are included. Without an owner, the item becomes nobody's task.

→
Step 02

Inventory

List the fields, tables, custom programs, forms, interfaces and files that read or write the CNPJ. Note the type, length and who uses them.

→
Step 03

Notes and versions

Record the SAP version, the support packages and the notes applied. Read the lead note 3714871 with access to the SAP portal and check the dependencies.

→
Step 04

Test data

Generate fictional CNPJs in the National CNPJ Simulator in the five patterns. Create partners, branches and business places with them.

Step 05

Test by layer

Master data, document, filing, bank and interface, in that order. Record the result of each case, with the exact error when it fails.

→
Step 06

Fix

Fix first what is SAP standard through notes, then the custom code and the interfaces. Repeat the test after each fix.

→
Step 07

Cutover and follow-up

Plan the go-live and a list of exceptions for the first alphanumeric partners. Define who looks at this list and how often.

→
Step 08

Rules that stay

Document that the CNPJ is text, that the head office is not deduced from the suffix 0001, that the digit uses ASCII minus 48 and that the two formats coexist.

How to build the acceptance test

The acceptance test does not need to be large. It needs to be complete: each CNPJ pattern goes through the whole cycle, from master data to filing and payment.

  • Create a supplier and a customer in each of the five patterns, with and without a mask when typing.
  • Create a business place with an alphanumeric CNPJ and issue an outbound document through it in the testing environment.
  • Receive an inbound document from an alphanumeric issuer and check the posting, the filing and the reports.
  • Generate a payment remittance with an alphanumeric supplier and confirm the layout with the bank.
  • Generate the filing files for the test period and validate them in the official programs.
  • Run every interface that reads the CNPJ with the five patterns and record where the letter is lost.
  • Repeat the test after each note or fix applied.

Expected result

Each case ends with one of three records: passed, passed with a manual adjustment or failed. Only the first counts as ready. The second becomes a pending item with an owner and the third blocks the layer from going live.

When outside support comes in

If the inventory shows many points or if the tax layer of the master data is inconsistent, the SAP Tax Diagnostic organizes what to fix first. The code and the interface stay with the integrator and the company's IT team, and the tax setup helps to check what the new CNPJ changes in tax determination.

Coexistence

Two formats in the same database, without losing traceability

The Receita says the numeric and alphanumeric formats are valid at the same time in all processes (Source: Receita Federal Questions and Answers). In an SAP environment this creates practical rules, and all of them come down to not losing information along the way: no letter, no leading zero and no deduction that the new format does not support.

The CNPJ is text

  • Store it as a character field of at least 14 positions, without punctuation.
  • Keep leading zeros and uppercase letters.
  • Never convert it to an integer, neither to display nor to sort.

The mask only displays

  • Accept typing with or without punctuation and normalize before saving.
  • Apply the mask AA.AAA.AAA/AAAA-DV only on screen and in the form.
  • Validate the length after removing the punctuation.

Sorting and search

  • Check indexes and selection fields that assume numeric order.
  • Reports by CNPJ range need new grouping logic.
  • Search by root uses the first 8 positions, numeric or not (Source: Receita Federal Questions and Answers).

Checklist by area

Each area with its own list

Lists to divide the work. Each item is a check, not a promise of a result.

Divide the list by owner and record the evidence of each check: a screenshot, a generated file or a return message. The evidence lets you repeat the test after a version update and shows, in an audit, that the adaptation was validated with care.

Tax and accounting

  • Check which of the company's obligations and documents carry third-party CNPJs.
  • Follow the current version of each program and manual on the SPED portal.
  • Validate the test filing with alphanumeric partners.
  • Record the decision on how to handle exceptions at the close.

Master data

  • Remove the numeric mask from the CNPJ field.
  • Create fictional partners in the five patterns.
  • Review duplicates by root and by full CNPJ.
  • Review any rule that deduces the head office from the suffix 0001.

Technology and ABAP

  • Inventory of fields, tables, interfaces and custom programs.
  • Replace numeric types with character where there is a CNPJ or access key.
  • Reproduce the official check digit in the custom routines.
  • Review the dependencies between SAP notes before applying them.

Finance and treasury

  • Check the remittance and return file with the bank.
  • Test Pix, TED and boleto with an alphanumeric supplier.
  • Check reconciliation by CNPJ.
  • Confirm how the field is handled in the bank's system.

Purchasing, sales and billing

  • Test order, receipt and billing with alphanumeric partners.
  • Test issuing, receiving and canceling documents in the testing environment.
  • Check document reports and forms.
  • Check the carrier master record.

Integrations and security

  • List the interfaces that read or write the CNPJ.
  • Agree with each technical partner on the version that accepts the format.
  • Warn the team about fake messages that ask for a fee or an update (Source: Receita Federal Questions and Answers).
  • Record the evidence of each test.
Common errors

What tends to go wrong

Each error has a cause known in the sources or a direct effect of the rule. The second block of each card says how to avoid it.

Almost all the errors on the list come from an old assumption: that the CNPJ is a number like any other. That assumption was built into masks, indexes, reports and interfaces that worked for decades, and so nobody questions it until the first case with letters. The fix, most of the time, is conceptual before it is technical: the CNPJ becomes a text code, with its own validation rules.

Treating the patch as the end of the workThe note solves the standard product. Custom code, interfaces and master data remain the company's responsibility (Source: SAP blog on the alphanumeric CNPJ).A complete inventory, with an owner for each item.
Testing only with numeric CNPJThe test passes, and the failure shows up with the first partner with letters.Test data with the five patterns.
Converting the CNPJ to an integerIt loses the letters and the leading zeros. The Receita defines the CNPJ with 14 characters, including leading zeros (Source: Receita Federal Questions and Answers, question 21).Always treat it as 14-character text.
Calculating the digit without ASCII minus 48It works with numbers and rejects a valid CNPJ with letters (Source: check digit calculation manual).Reproduce the official example, 35 and 12.
Numeric-only input maskSAP reports error AR104 when the field accepts only numbers (Source: SAP KBA 3756985).Apply the notes, check the tax number verification rules and test typing. KBA 3756985 records a case where note 3583627 was already applied and the error continued.
Requiring a length of 14 before removing the punctuationErrors AR102 and AR103 reported by SAP point to length validation in master data (Source: SAP KBA 3776321).Validate length after normalization.
Deducing the head office from the suffix 0001The Receita warns that the suffix is no longer definitive (Source: Receita Federal Questions and Answers).Use the master record as the source of the head office.
Blocking certain lettersThe Receita advises accepting all letters and controls prohibited combinations internally (Source: Receita Federal Questions and Answers).Accept A to Z.
Applying notes without checking dependenciesThere are reports of syntax errors and dumps caused by dependencies between notes (Source: SAP KBA 3769328; SAP KBAs on syntax errors after the notes).Read the lead note and the dependencies with access to the SAP portal.
Waiting for the first partner with lettersThe Receita advises starting without waiting for the rollout date (Source: Receita Federal Questions and Answers).Test in the testing environment now.
Opening a request to the Receita to change the CNPJNo action is required from anyone who already has a CNPJ (Source: Receita Federal Questions and Answers).Tell the master data team what is and what is not needed.
Falling for a fake messageThe Receita does not charge a fee or ask for an update by message (Source: Receita Federal Questions and Answers).Brief the team and the IT supplier.

Rule to keep

If a single test with letters fails, start by treating the CNPJ as 14-character text. Most of the errors on this list disappear with that base fix.

Where DFSpro comes in

The tax layer, alongside the integrator

The alphanumeric CNPJ is a technology subject with a tax consequence. The division of work must be clear from the start.

What DFSpro does

  • Reviews, in the tax layer, what the new format changes in master data, in the determination rule and in the posting.
  • Works on the tax layer of the project, alongside the integrator and the IT team.
  • Compares, in the SAP Tax Diagnostic, the documents issued and received with the tax calculation and the filing.

What it does not do

  • Does not replace the integrator or the IT team in changing code and interfaces.
  • Does not guarantee a result or set a deadline before knowing the real environment.
  • Does not decide the priority of the subject for the company.

An SAP Tax Governance consultancy founded in 2018 in Curitiba, DFSpro sells the license of GUEPARDO Tax, a product of NTT DATA, as an Authorized Channel. If the environment uses a complementary tax solution, it goes into the inventory and the test like any other component.

Want to check your scenario?

If you already have the inventory, or want to know where to start from your environment, describe the scenario to DFSpro.

Who does what

  • Tax determination and posting rules. The company's tax team, with DFSpro: check what the new CNPJ changes in master data, in the rule and in the posting.
  • Fields, validations and interfaces. Company IT or integrator: change type, length, mask and check digit.
  • SAP notes and versions. SAP team of the company or the integrator: read the lead note, apply it and check dependencies.
  • Filing and payments. Accounting and finance: validate files and remittances with alphanumeric partners.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about the alphanumeric CNPJ

01Will my company's CNPJ change?+

No. The Receita Federal says existing numbers stay valid, with the same check digits, and that no action is required from anyone already registered. The alphanumeric format applies to new registrations, including new branches of companies that already exist (Receita Federal Questions and Answers, questions 6, 15 and 29).

02When did the alphanumeric CNPJ start to apply?+

Normative Instruction RFB 2.229/2024 plans implementation from July 2026. In the Receita's schedule, the systems went into production at 07:00 on 27/07/2026 and the first alphanumeric CNPJ was implemented on 31/07/2026. The two formats have coexisted since then.

03Does every new CNPJ come with letters?+

Not necessarily. The assignment of letters and numbers is random, and the Receita admits that, even after July 2026, a new registration may come out with numbers only. A prepared system must accept both formats, in any combination (Questions and Answers, questions 27 and 28).

04How is the check digit calculated with letters?+

By the same modulo 11 as always. The difference is that each character becomes a value equal to the ASCII code minus 48, so numbers 0 to 9 are worth 0 to 9 and the letter A is worth 17, B is worth 18, and so on up to Z, which is worth 42. The weights go from 2 to 9, from right to left. The section on the calculation brings the official example step by step.

05Can the letters be in the root, in the order or in both parts?+

They can be in both parts, in any combination. The Receita gives as possible, for example, an alphanumeric root with a numeric order, and a numeric root with an alphanumeric order. The first 12 characters accept letters and numbers, and only the last two are always numeric.

06Does the suffix 0001 still identify the head office?+

Only at the moment the CNPJ is generated. The Receita warns that over time a branch can become the main establishment even with an order number other than 0001. A business rule that deduces the head office from the suffix needs to be reviewed.

07Do I need to wait for SAP to release notes before starting?+

No. The Receita advises starting the system update without waiting for the July 2026 date. On the SAP side, the lead note is 3714871 and SAP itself warns that delivery dates are estimates and may change. The inventory of custom code, interfaces and master data can move in parallel.

08What does SAP say about the alphanumeric CNPJ?+

In a SAP blog on SAP Community, of 17/04/2026, signed by a product specialist, SAP lists the affected areas: business partner, nota fiscal and logistics database, NF-e, Brazil payroll and finance with banks (CNAB, Pix, TED and boleto). The lead note is 3714871, and SAP recommends reviewing custom developments and interfaces that use the CNPJ or the access key.

09Does the NF-e access key also change?+

Yes, in the schema. The notice of Technical Note 2026.004 says that CNPJ-type fields and the access key change from numeric to alphanumeric. The length of the key and the calculation rules for its final part must be checked in the Technical Note on the National NF-e Portal, which is the official source. There is a test of the key's 9 fields, with the check digit, in the section The 44-position key, field by field.

10What do SPED, the EFD-Reinf and the ECF say about the alphanumeric CNPJ?+

The SPED portal published Technical Note EFD-Reinf 03/2026 and new XSD schemas for the alphanumeric CNPJ, with production from July on a date to be announced. The ECF layout 12 manual defines the CNPJ field as type C with 14 positions, without a mask. For the EFD ICMS IPI, the ECD and the EFD Contribuições, check the current version of the program and the manual on the SPED portal.

11How do I test without using a real company's CNPJ?+

With the National CNPJ Simulator, from the Receita Federal. It is free, generates up to 1,000 fictional head office and branch CNPJs per user, validates the formation rules and the check digits, and works in the browser. For tax documents in the testing environment, the CT-e Portal published a table with alphanumeric CNPJs and state registrations created in the test environment.

12Do I need to notify customers, suppliers and banks?+

The Receita says no action is required with partners, suppliers, customers or financial institutions, but all systems, public and private, must accept both formats. In practice, what the company does is make sure its own system receives, stores and transmits the new format without losing letters.

13Does the alphanumeric CNPJ work as a Pix key?+

Yes. The Receita says the use of the CNPJ as a Pix key stays the same and that companies with an alphanumeric CNPJ will also be able to use it as a key. In the company's payment systems, the point to test is the capture and transmission of the field, not a new business rule.

14I received a message asking for a fee or a CNPJ update. Is it official?+

No. The Receita states that it does not charge a fee to update existing CNPJs or for new registrations, and that it does not contact people by WhatsApp, email or SMS asking for an update or a payment. A message like that is probably a scam.

15Does DFSpro change fields and interfaces?+

DFSpro works on the tax layer of the SAP project and checks what master data, the determination rule and the tax posting need to do with the new format, and checks the result. Changing code and the technical integration stay with the integrator or the company's IT team, and DFSpro works alongside them, without replacing them.

Next steps

Start with what your SAP assumes is a number

If you already have the inventory of fields and interfaces, the conversation with DFSpro starts from it. If you do not yet, the first step is to build that list, and the step by step above shows how.
